Shred Document Using a good Paper Shredder

If you dont shred document, whether personal home documents or business ones from your company, there is a chance someone might dig up your trashes and have a detailed view of your personal life or business plans.

The mere fact that such a possibility exist should alarm you enough to make you consider buying a paper shredder

Do you ever throw out credit card or bank statements?

Not alarmed enough...?

How about any of the following:

  • ATM receipts
  • Anything with your Social Security Number Documents containing names, addresses, phone numbers, emails
  • Investment, stock, and property transactions
  • Documents containing passwords or PIN numbers
  • Driver's license number
  • Employment records
  • Legal documents
  • Items with your signature
  • Personal letters
  • Tax forms
  • Utility bills
...and more....

The Risk & Danger

If you do not shred document with a paper shredder, as you should, and i can analyze your trash for a month, i can build a detailed profile about your life.So too can any any private investigator, government agent, nosy neighbor, or stalker.

If you ever read some of the books that teach techniques for harassment and revenge, they all point out that to disrupt someone's life you have to learn something about that person. These books often recommend going through a person's trash to learn information that can be used against him.

To foil trash analysis, anything that might reveal information about your personal life should be shredded before being thrown out. A secure shred is what is needed.

The two Types of Paper Shredders

  • Strip shredders
  • Crosscut shredders

Strip shredders:
Generally less expensive and allow a higher volume of shredding (you can shred more pages at once)

Crosscut shredders:
Offers a higher degree of security when you shred document in that there is generally no hope of reassembling a document that has been run through a crosscut shredder.

So does this mean that someone can reassemble a document that has been run through a strip shredder?

When dealing with strip shredders, you must take into account a concept known as "secure volume." Simply put, secure volume is shredding a great enough volume of like paper to preclude reassembling the documents.
Government regulations regarding secure volume and destruction of documents

Recommendations

I tend to favor the crosscut paper shredder like this one on the photo because it gives the greatest degree of security when you shred document.

secure shred I believe that the additional cost is well justified when you consider the security advantages.

But if you are on a tight budget but still want to shred document, by all means use a strip shredder and the secure volume method of shredding.

Any type of shredding is preferable to placing intact documents in the trash. If you come up with a document that is particularly sensitive and you don't want a chance that it might be reassembled (no matter how slim that chance might be), burn it!

This can be messy and may not be an option if you live in a location with strict rules against burning trash. But its even more secure than a secure shred using a crosscut shredder to shred document.
